Having read the classical mechanics book, I was extremely excited when this was released. Nur noch 17 auf Lager (mehr ist unterwegs). It oscillates between being rigorous and heuristic. Leonard Susskind's online lectures are always excellent, including the Theoretical Minimum series. Thank you for mentioning it in your blog or I would not have thought to read it. Senior lecturers in math at Columbia have done some excellent work, though I didn’t know that Susskind was so happy with their reviews of his work. This book is in bad need of an edit, which does sometimes detract from following the text. Start by marking “Quantum Mechanics: The Theoretical Minimum (Theoretical Minimum #2)” as Want to Read: Error rating book. I would warn though that it is not for the light-hearted. He does a great job - it's almost impossible to believe that something as cool and elegant as this wouldn't be true. Lowell Bogg, His research interests include string theory, quantum field theory, quantum statistical mechanics and quantum cosmology. Well... string theory is. Susskind's Theoretical Minimum series might not be everybody's cup of tea, but I'm really beginning to love this style (way more than the video lectures, I should add!). Many thanks to all who suggested ideas for further reading. März 2014. His research interests include string theory, quantum field theory, quantum statistical mechanics and quantum cosmology. I haven't read Volume I on classical mechanics yet, and maybe reading that first would have made it a bit easier to follow things here but it doesn't hamper understanding. This shopping feature will continue to load items when the Enter key is pressed. I recently took an intermediate stats class and a course in electrophysiology, and was happy to see that my math muscles, such as they are, haven’t completely atrophied. And a kilogram is a nice weight to carry around. If nothing happens, download GitHub Desktop and try again. We’d love your help. GitHub is home to over 50 million developers working together to host and review code, manage projects, and build software together. It was at this point in the book, that I wish the author had gone into a little more detail about how Action differs from Work or at least more into the thinking process that led to Lagrange’s equation. In recent years Leonard Susskind has been giving an excellent series of lectures on basic ideas of theoretical physics, under the title The Theoretical Minimum. This book is not an easy job, especially if your physics definitions are a bit rusty. You're listening to a sample of the Audible audio edition. Please try again. Goes through the basics of Quantum, with the goal of: A Mind Tingling Challenge – Learn Quantum Mechanics. Ook voor handige studietips en de rest van je studiespullen ben je bij ons aan het juiste adres. You signed in with another tab or window. Talk about a cliffhanger ending! Apart from that, the humility that comes with advancing age and a wry sense of humor will suffice to carry you through this engaging little book. The best introduction to the math, without blather about quantum weirdness, Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 8, 2018. Please try your request again later. It oscillates between being rigorous and heuristic. Be prepared to read sections over and over again to understand some of the concepts better. I made the mistake of watching the older ones which aren’t as closely coordinated with the book that I am over halfway through. In diesem Sinne gibt es 4 Sterne, da ich mir an vielen Stellen doch eine etwas ausführlichere Herleitung gewünscht hätte. Wij maken je studietijd zo makkelijk mogelijk, zodat jij slim kunt studeren. It goes over vector and wavefunction formalisms, and discusses almost all the math you need to understand (you'll need calculus before reading this book). We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. The authors did a great job in explaining QM in an accessible manner in a lively language. A deeply succinct introduction to the world of Quantum Mechanics, the foundations that govern our world, and the basis on which future discoveries of physical laws will be built. Here are my solutions to problems. But it is definitely a self-contained and you need very little to go through it. The last third of the book is a quicker-paced trip through the usual material about wave-functions and the Schrödinger equation, ending up with the details for the harmonic oscillator potential. I found this the best intro course ever for QM. Wiederholen Sie die Anforderung später noch einmal. Leonard Susskind puts quantum mechanics in the most entertaining and relatable terms. It’s very brief, as it starts with the principle of least action and goes through the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations of mechanics in about 30 pages. From the reviews, it seems to be quite good. 4,5. Nur noch 8 auf Lager (mehr ist unterwegs). Great introduction to the subject giving a very insightful depth to linear algebra. The mathematical level will challenge readers lacking prior acquaintance with algebra, calculus, vectors and matrices, complex numbers, and classical mechanics, but this is after all the basic toolkit for anyone seeking to get a serious grip on what makes quantum mechanics tick. Compared to the first volume, Susskind shows you how beautiful quantum mechanics is. And, unless I'm missing something, the answers to the exercises are not included in the Kindle book. Perhaps surprisingly, the first chapters of A. Zee Eintein´s Gravity in a Nutshell contain an amusing introduction to variational calculus, actions and lagrangians. Then you can start reading Kindle books on your smartphone, tablet, or computer - no Kindle device required. There are no discussion topics on this book yet. Now he returns with the next chal… The Theoretical Minimum books are filled completely with equations and if your mathematics isn't up to scratch you wont get past the second lecture. In the first half of the 20th century physics was turned on its head by the radical discoveries of Max Planck, Albert Einstein, Niels Bohr, Werner Heisenberg, and Erwin Schroedinger. In particular, I worked Exercise 4.6, which I believe was mis-stated. But, as other reviewers have noted, the Kindle edition of this book curtails some equations at the end of the line, and the book in general has a number of minor technical errors. Most are typed with MS Word and I made a pdf file of each as well. Never thought learning the essentials of quantum mechanics would be this easy. I think I can safely say that this serves as the most acccessible introductory text on quantum mechanics. Be the first to ask a question about Quantum Mechanics. Sadly this disconnect between my recollection of my physics classes and the introduction of this new material left me a bit confused through the remainder of the book. Juli 2018. Leonard and Art do a wonderful tribute to the big players of the late 19th - early 20th century from Maxwell to Einstein, and my personal favourite, Paul Dirac; whilst I believe having a precursory knowledge of the mathematics involved is useful, with the structure of the literature involved it is not entirely necessary and a thorough understanding of the difficult concepts that our greatest minds tackle can be grasped.
